The Autoimmune Pathologies Association, founded in 1996, is
a nonprofit International Association, financed through voluntary
donations and which, as a main target, takes care of the patients
afflicted by autoimmune diseases. These pathologies are due
to an anomalous functioning of the immune system, which deviates
its own activity, usually oriented to eliminate extraneous bodies,
such as viruses, bacteria and tumourous cells from the human
organism, against the human organism itself. The most widespread
and invalidating pathologies are multiple sclerosis, systemic
lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma.
APAI, Onlus Association, is regulated by an
executive council chaired by President Christine Gammon, whose
task is the co-ordination of the social and administrative activities;
she establishes and makes executive the programs and the objectives
estimated in the Constitution, as well.
What is more, the Scientific Committee, an integral
part of the Association, provides for the spread of the programs,
for the effective start of new projects of research, verifies
if the projects can be carried out and if the proponents of
the projects of research are competent and it establishes the
financial values of the projects. The most important specialists
in autoimmunity collaborate in the Scientific Committee.
